About Sainik School

The Sainik Schools Society, a division of the Ministry of Defence, developed and oversees the Sainik Schools system of schools located in India (MoD). They were developed in 1961 by India’s then-Defence Minister, V. K. Krishna Menon, to address the regional & class imbalance in the officer cadre of the armed forces and to get students ready for admission to the National Defence Academy (NDA) & Indian Naval Academy (INA). Sainik Schools contribute 25% to 30% of the officer cadets to NDA and INA, together with 1 RIMC and 5 RMS (Rashtriya Military Schools). There were 33 Sainik Schools as of 2021, and the MoD plans to build 100 additional boarding Sainik Schools through public-private partnerships (PPP).

Sainik Schools are operated by the MoD in partnership with the relevant state governments. The MoD provides yearly money and serves officers in important positions like principal. The land, the infrastructure, and other administrative and instructional staff are all provided by the state governments.

Sainik Schools use the CBSE curriculum and adhere to the “CBSE Plus” model, aiming to prepare students for enrolment in the NDA and INA. From the sixth grade, students are admitted to Sainik Schools. The reservation policy takes into account SC/ST, state of residence, and the dependents of active-duty and retired members of the armed forces.

The Royal Indian Military College (RIMC) and Royal Indian Military Schools (now known as Rashtriya Military School or RMS), which have produced numerous service chiefs for India, served as an inspiration for the creation of the Sainik Schools.

The goal of the Sainik Schools is to prepare students for leadership roles as officers in the nation’s defence services. The schools use the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination (AISSEE) to identify bright and potential students, and they then concentrate on shaping their overall personalities with a concentration on extracurricular activities.

The tools available at Sainik schools enable cadets to advance their abilities in extracurricular activities, academics, and athletics. Running and cross-country tracks, play areas, parade grounds, boxing rings, firing ranges, canoeing, horseback riding, mountaineering, trekking, and hiking clubs, obstacle courses, football, hockey, and cricket fields, as well as volleyball and basketball courts, are all part of the Sainik Schools’ infrastructure. The NCC also accepts cadets as members. When a cadet completes their 12th standard, they often possess a NCC B certificate.
